If it is smoking out the tailpipe , that means that either coolant or a bunch of excess fuel is getting. I once had a Ford Courier pickup that suddenly started blowing white smoke. It was so heavy that cars behind me on the highway were turning their headlights on in broad daylight! The carb was sucking in transmission fluid through the vacuum line and burning it.

Most diesels will smmoke white on startup in cold weather. White smoke like this is usually just unburned fuel coming out the exhaust. This can be associated with a head gasket failure.

Depending on the temp and vent selection it will also blow a huge cloud for a minute and then it dies back down. There is also a noise like a muffled clunk when you. I would check the lift pump pressure. Would also check the fuel lines between the tank and lift pump. Strange tho that it works OK after another start-up.

The big Cummins and Cats will lay down a smoke screen for several minutes at cold startup.
