Vw t4 white smoke on startup

It smokes grey smoke on start up, smells really diesel exhaust and is a little fuel heavy. My workshop has checked all other parts like piston, battery, etc is fine, they suspect is the fuel pump. Will be trouble shooting it soon. Has anyone encounter this set of problems? Either the GP heater, one or more glow plugs or the GP relay are possibly malfunctioning.


This would definitely make it hard to start on a cold engine. The white smoke is the result of normal condensation which builds up inside the exhaust system. I get lots of that in the winter for a while after. Also my friend said it could be the fuel pump but would the van start and run if the fuel pump had gone.


Over the last couple of months it started out intermitently usually after a run then stopping (say traffic lights) on idle the clouds would start. Had a service about a couple of months ago and thats when problem started. Went to view TTransporter. WHY DIESELS SMOKE : Diesel car engines get smoky because of a few common reasons.

Methinks he probably revved it pretty har but that is their perogative I guess. I do a very good job of maintaining (MPG!). Anyway it’s given me 125k miles so far with an average amount of trouble.


Yesterday I got an oil change at my trusted mechanic. Already replaced the turbo with a used borg K03s that had 60k on it. The origional turbo was TRASHED! The ECU is chipped and the motor is pushing 20psi max and about 250hp (estimating).

If the white smoke is due to the engine being too cool, adding an automatic pre-heater may eliminate white diesel smoke.


Diesel engines also sometimes produce black or blue smoke , both of which are also signs of problems within the engine. Why do people hate the word moist? Is World War III going to happen?
