Vauxhall zafira 1 9 cdti white smoke

Vauxhall Opel Vectra 1. Smell is like burning diesel. The smoke is intermittent when driving on motor ways the smoke goes away but when driving locally the smoke appears but when initially starting the there is no smoke only when driving for after a few miles then when if turn it of and re-start the engine the smoke disappears again. CDti and it has been going back and forth to my local garage as when I select or 6th gear (when the engine has warmed up).
