There was a lot of oil residue and carbon buildup on most of them. I have a chevy 3that started smoking ( white smoke ) and I thought it was possibly a head gasket so I had the heads surfaced and replaced the head gasket etc. I got it back together it still smoked. Smoke out of only one side of dual exhaust.
Now I have white smoke coming from exhaust more frequently and sometimes I notice it even when truck is running, not just on startup. L Vortec 3Vengine. Automatic transmission. We drove it back from another state even towing a trailer no problem.
When I rev it up, I can clear it out. But as it sits at idle, it starts to smoke again. The longer I let it idle, the worse the smoke gets.
My setup: Chevy 3bored 0. You could be running too rich. The black spots on the ground could simply be water (condensation) and carbon. As mentione check the spark plugs. Smoke clears up while driving and does not reappear while stopped and idling (like stopped at a light). If I park for a few minutes then, come back and start it white smoke reappears until i start driving. This is usually the last color of smoke you want to see, particularly on gas cars.
If the smoke is thin, and goes away relatively quickly, than it is merely condensation. However, thicker, longer lasting smoke is a much larger headache. Your engine is more than likely burning coolant. Blowing white smoke is a red flag for your diesel engine, yet we see this happen all the time to our customers.

I changed plugs and wires. The cooling system for the Chevrolet 3engine consists of a water pump, a radiator and a thermostat. It is of vital importance that the cooling system work properly, as a cooling problem can lead not only to an engine which overheats, but also to more serious problems such as a damaged head gasket or a cracked. There is definitely something burning and I am assuming it is coolant but the problem is that I am not losing coolant! There is quite a bit of smoke comes out, especially when idling. Some white exhaust smoke is normal, especially when you first start the car. Condensation can turn to vapor, providing what looks like white exhaust.
But excessive white smoke likely means coolant is leaking into the engine combustion chambers.
