Engine blowing smoke

One reason for white smoke is very common and completely harmless. A car engine can smoke for several reasons. This could be caused by valve stem seals, worn rings, a plugged PCV valve, not changing the oil for extended periods, too high of an oil level or transmission fluid being sucked into the intake manifold from a bad vacuum modulator.

One of two conditions is responsible for white smoke blowing out of your exhaust. First is normal condition (so you don’t have to panic) and the second is a not so normal condition which should be fixed as soon as possible. Diesel engine smoke comes in three colors: white, black and blue. Consistent smoke coming from the exhaust most likely indicates a deeper internal problem with the engine. A small puff of smoke during quick acceleration is acceptable with older diesel engines due to a lag before the turbocharger’s air flow can match the increased volume of diesel fuel injected into the cylinders.

Different colors of smoke can indicate different problems with your engine. Blowing white smoke is a red flag for your diesel engine , yet we see this happen all the time to our customers. In many cases, white smoke emanating from the tailpipe (often at idle once the engine reached operating temperature) typically means a worn out injector. This will cause white smoke , along with the idle issue. Other reasons for blue or white smoke from engines include: Exceeding the engine’s oil capacity shown on dipstick.

Engine oil capacity is dependent on your specific engine model and can be determined by checking the Oil Recommendation FAQ. An under-sized piston leads to blow by when the engine is cold. As the engine heats up, the piston expands, and blow by disappears under normal operation. This is considered typical cold engine blow by, and it is unavoidable.

What does blowing smoke mean? Who sings the song blowing smoke? Why is smoke blowing down my chimney or out of my woodburner? Does blowing pot smoke into someones ear make them high? Persistent blue smoke means your engine needs a professional overhaul.

Crankcase overfill Take care not to fill your engine oil past the high mark on the dipstick. Excess oil could leak into the combustion chamber. White Smoke - Causes and Cures. You can usually correct this problem by cleaning the air filter.

Blue or white smoke means the engine is burning oil. Most of the time, the lawn mower smoke will stop on its own. The most common contaminant will be gasoline that has leaked from the carburetor. In an outboar though, it may mean something other than a tow to shore and an expensive repair.

WHITE SMOKE occurs when raw diesel comes through the exhaust completely intact and unburned. Some causes of this include. This typically occurs due to the engine being too cool to burn the fuel, often resulting from low compression in one cylinder, problems with the fuel injection timing or a defective fuel injector.

Worn engine is another culprit responsible for blue smoke from exhaust. Each engine has pistons which are move up and down a cylinder. Each piston has metal rings round its side like bracelets.

The function of these rings is to help the piston forming a tight seal against the cylinder.
