The air quality in Canberra is “hazardous extreme” owing to the smoke from the nearby bushfires. There is serious likelihood of effects for sensitive groups and symptoms among general population. The thick smoke is a result of fires that continue to burn on. University campuses were shut, as were major tourism attractions, including the zoo, swimming pools and and some banks and civic services. A blind man would have noticed the smoke hovering over canberra the past few days but since mid morning today it seems to have become particularly heavy.

People who are sensitive to smoke , especially those with pre-existing heart and lung conditions, should take extra care and avoid all physical activity outside at these times. The Brumbies are moving their Super Rugby training base to Newcastle, 4kms away, because of the hazardous air conditions in Canberra.

The ACT woke to a New Year and the worst air quality in the worl with the national capital shrouded in a pall of thick smoke blown in overnight from the bushfires in NSW. There was hardly any visibility across the national capital and the air quality was rated Hazardous Extreme at Canberra’s three measuring stations in Monash, Florey and Civic. A few mornings recently I’ve asked in a group chat what the air quality is like outside (I have friends who go to the gym early every morning so have been outside an hour or so before I leave the house) because I want to know whether to walk to work or not, based on the smoke haze.

There are currently no fires burning in the ACT. The event is on the ATP Challenger Tour and the ITF Women’s circuit. The ACT Brumbies have already packed up, while the Canberra Raiders are set to follow suit to escape Canberra ’s thick, acrid smoke. Newcastle was the Brumbies’ destination, while the Raiders are investigating options in either Northern NSW or on the Sunshine Coast.

I’ve been running the evaporative cooler and it’s fine. I’m sure the wet filter pads will absorb most of the smoke particles. Smoke from the NSW bushfires.
