Dpf regeneration white smoke

I drive miles each way to work, but the last two weeks white smoke has been bellowing out of the tail pipe at the exact place during my ride in too work. During this process the ‘wet and sooty’ particulate matter is subjected to further combustion inside the DPF itself. Surface temperatures inside the DPF can exceed 6Degrees Celsius, at which point the soot turns into a hot white ash. In a Diesel engine with a Diesel particulate filter ( DPF ) system, high-sulfur fuel causes white smoke containing odorous and harmful pollutants during DPF regeneration.

I wouldn’t necessarily say the white smoke would be from the DPF. If you have ever been behind a car that is going through the regeneration cycle of the DPF , you will see the amount of black smoke that will come out from it. Diesel cars will usually produce white smoke from the following three symptoms.

Do you get clouds of white toxic smelling smoke when your car regens ? explains various scenarios where you would benefit from a manual DPF regen button. CDTI and faced problem that during the DPF filter regeneration process smoke is coming from under the bonnet. Smell is like burning diesel.

Light smoke continues for miles til i pull into my parking. Regeneration is the term used to describe cleaning of the DPF. RE: DPF smells and white smoke.

Engine and vehicle tests found that sulfur compounds emitted from the engine accumulated on the catalysts in the DPF system and were emitted as white smoke during DPF regeneration. DPF white smokes, vectra 1. White smoke from the exhaust A slight increase in fuel consumption. Turning engine on and off frequently (if the engine is not left running for more than minutes at a time).

The white smoke was observed when the catalyst temperature was more than 450°C, under conditions such as the early stage of DPF regeneration. As a DPF is fitted no diesel smoke should ever escape out the exhaust. The car is burning engine oil. This could be a number of things, but the increased frequency of the DPF regens (high RPM and engine fans) would suggest the DPF is having to work hard.

A single puff of white smoke is not a problem. What are you talking about? This is a sign of complete regeneration.

In fact look at the AA website where it says white puff of smoke is typical of DPF regeneration. I am talking about one single puff of ash. You shouldn’t notice anything other than perhaps a puff of white smoke from the exhaust when the process is completed. Unfortunately, GM had a problem with the gasket not sealing. The magnehelic gauge reads 5kPa (inches water gauge) when regeneration of the DPF now starts.

So to recap, check the DPF pressure sensor to ECU wiring carefully before spending lots of money on the garage partswap goosechase. Good luck on what is a fantastic car. My inclination would be to get your Toyota dealer to take a look. We recommend yearly DOC and DPF removal and cleaning.

Sometimes the oil level can rise to a point where the engine ‘runs away’. It can happen on any car which uses this type of DPF regeneration process.
