Otari wilton bush

A garden for conservation, research, education, and recreation. Native plant collections by design. The plant collections were. Located in Wellington, it is the only public garden in New Zealand.

This 100-hectare forest consists of some of the oldest trees which also includes an 800-year-old Rimu. Public parking is also available off Churchill Drive. Wheelchair-friendly paths run from the main carpark to the Information Centre, over the Canopy Walkway, and to Cockayne Lookout.


Just fifteen minutes from the hustle and bustle of Lambton Quay, fifteen minutes from. This unique plant sanctuary and forest reserve consists of 1hectares of native forest and five hectares of plant collections. The name “Otari” is Māori for “Place of Snares”. The forest was a good place for bird hunting.

When the region was colonized by Europeans, trees were removed for timber, and to create farmland. Hiking tails, Canopy Walkway and 8year old Rimu all await the visitor. The gardens comprise of hectares while native bush covers hectares. The reserve consists of 1hectares of native forest, including an 800-year-old rimu and around 2plant species from as far away as the Kermadec Islands.


The canopy walkway is a raised walkway that provides a unique chance to view life in, and from, the top level of trees such as mature tawa, rewarewa and hinau. An aerial walkway crosses high above the bush, giving an unusual vantage point over the gardens. Look and listen for the native birds that flock to this haven: the bellbird ( korimako ), New Zealand wood pigeon ( kereru ), and parson bird ( tūī) among others.


We did not have a lot of time, so we strolled the Lady Norwood Rose Garden and Begonia House. Wilton bus from downtown (minutes). The botanic garden covers an area of hectare, and is dedicated solely to native plants. There is also an occasional bus along Churchhill Drive.

A range of possibilities depending what people are interested in on the day, from original forest to regenerating bush. It is open hours a day, seven days a week and is free to enter.
