Thick white smoke from exhaust on startup

What causes white smoke from diesel exhaust? How to fix black smoke from exhaust? Can too much oil cause white smoke from exhaust?

When it’s cold outside and you notice white smoke at startup , then you probably have nothing to worry about. When the warm or hot exhaust gases meet cold outside air , condensation and steam is a result. After a short amount of driving, the white smoke should lessen. If you see white smoke coming out of the car exhaust pipe in thin wisps , but only when you start the engine and not while driving, there should be no need to worry. On the other han thicker smoke is a pretty big issue.

This is nothing but steam caused due to condensation. Then everything is fine as usual. It never used to happen. If you notice that your car is blowing white smoke. On cold winter days, it is common to see white smoke from exhaust pipe as soon as you start the car.

Thick white smoke from exhaust on startup

If you see white smoke during startup only, then this is probably because oil leaks pass the valves and mixes with any moisture present in the car’s exhaust. As the engine warms up after a few minutes, this white smoke will not be reduced because condensation is dissipated. When you park your car under extremely cold conditions, the car becomes too cool, its air shrinks and starts producing moisture. White Smoke at Start-up and Short Term Driving Condensation that accumulates inside the exhaust pipes, converter and mufflers can produce a puff of white smoke upon diesel engine start-up.

In very cold temperatures, the heated exhaust can freeze into minute fuel droplets when exiting the exhaust and produce a more prolonged emission of white smoke for a very short period of driving time. One of two conditions is responsible for white smoke blowing out of your exhaust. First is normal condition (so you don’t have to panic) and the second is a not so normal condition which should be fixed as soon as possible. This isn't normal, brought it to Toyota Dealer. Thick white smoke upon startup , and continuous white smoke when running.

Replaced Piston Rings, Head Gasket and some injectors. Could be coolant leak, Gasket leak, Piston Rings leak or dirty injectors. Have it compression check first. But if it never happened before and now suddenly you see it then maybe.

Check coolant level for. Sometimes it is regular but other times it is intermittant. The smoke is greyish white and lasts until it drifts away. I suspect that the smoke is white because the oil gets past the exhaust valve seal(s) and drips down the stem(s). When the engine starts the oil is vaporized and comes out white since it is not burned in the combustion chamber.

Thick , black smoke suggests that the engine is being flooded with gasoline. The black smoke may show there is a return fuel line which is obstructed. Fuel injectors and sensors might also be damaged.

White smoke can be nothing to be concerned about if it’s thin, like vapor.
