What can cause white smoke out the tailpipe? Why does white smoke from exhaust smells like gas? When the warm or hot exhaust gases meet cold outside air, condensation and steam is a result. This is nothing but steam caused due to condensation. If white smoke comes out when the ignition is started there are a few reasons.
The first one is an internal problem which we will discuss further below. But if you get white smoke from exhaust at startup , it might be from these reasons: A cracked or warped cylinder head. If you see white smoke during startup only, then this is probably because oil leaks pass the valves and mixes with any moisture present in the car’s exhaust. When you park your car under extremely cold conditions, the car becomes too cool, its air shrinks and starts producing moisture. Moved to golf cart community and for last year averaged 175.
I now drive highway and city. Car in garage when not in use. As the engine warms up and the condensation dissipates the white exhaust smoke (steam) is no longer seen. But, watch your fluid levels. Just in case you actually do have something bad going on.
When I start my car for the first time every day, I have white smoke come out my exhaust usually for about a minute or two but it runs fine after that. This in white smoke coming from the tailpipe , usually accompanied by a sweet smell. Solution: Your engine will need to be partially disassemble have the gasket replace and then be reassembled. You can taste on the water from the exhaust, if it smells sweet it’s most likely coolant, and in this case, you have a bigger problem.
It happens because during startup any condensation that has formed in the engine over the night while your car is parked is steaming off and will exit on the tailpipe as white smoke. You would obviously want to fix this leak very fast because if the engine components are not being lubricated properly by the oil, then they’ll start to get worn out and damaged rather quickly. Usually white smoke from the tailpipe means a blown head gasket or worse. Does it still drive okay? As a car owner you expect something to come from the tailpipe.
Then everything is fine as usual. As the exhaust stream begins to heat up, the hot air can then pickup the condensation and take it out the tailpipe as a white cloud. It never used to happen. If the problem is a leaking head-gasket cylinder you will see white smoke , because the faulty gasket is allowing air and fuel to enter the cooling system. As this mixture burns, white smoke is produced and exits through your tailpipe.
Condensation that accumulates inside the exhaust pipes, converter and mufflers can produce a puff of white smoke upon diesel engine start-up. In very cold temperatures, the heated exhaust can freeze into minute fuel droplets when exiting the exhaust and produce a more prolonged emission of white smoke for a very short period of driving time. One of the main causes of white exhaust smoke and coolant loss is a cracked or warped cylinder hea a cracked engine block, or head gasket failure caused by overheating. A cracked head may allow coolant to leak into one or more cylinders or into the combustion chamber of the engine.
When you notice any kind of smoke from your exhaust be it white smoke from exhaust on startup or when accelerating and even when idle, they all are indications that, your vehicle is having one issue or the other which need your attention. How serious this will be, is totally dependent on the colour and type of smoke that is coming out. Someone must be pretty new to automobiles for not checking it first.
White smoke on startup is a very good indication of a bad PCV valve. Glad you got her fixed. L with 120miles on it. I have never had one issue with it, not warning lights or anything. Maintenance has been up to date.
A little white smoke that is odorless coming out of a COLD four stroke engine is likely to be steam from condensation in the exhaust system, and it won’t last longer than it takes the pipes to warm up. After that, the exhaust is fine. If just at start up this could indicate moisture in the exhaust, this can happen when the engine is turned off and moisture forms in the exhaust through condensation from the air.
