Smoke detector on separate circuit ? This really makes no sense because any type of surge or lightning strike will trip the gfbrkr. Please ease my thinking on this question. These are interconnected Fireex smoke detectors (I believe because they have a yellow wire connected to the red wire). If that doesn’t work, flipping the circuit breaker off and back on might stop the noise.


If all of that fails, your ultimate solution may. Update in response to a reader question about how to wire a smoke alarm on branch circuit with a light. If the breaker trips and the smokes are on their own circuit , it could be some time before the problem is discovered but if they were on a lighting circuit , the problem would be apparant. I also noticed that on my existing detectors , the wiring is done outside of a box. How to replace a hardwired smoke alarm?

If you have a wired detector , use the circuit breaker to shut off power to the device while you clean. Take off the cover to reveal the inside of the detector. Remove the detector from its mounting bracket and unplug the power supply.

Once reset, the smoke detector should chirp one more time. The initial power supply for the smoke detector circuit is provided by a 2-wire circuit which is typically supplied by a lighting circuit. With a hardwired smoke detector system you can press the TEST button on any smoke detector and this should cause all of the smoke detectors to go into alarm all at. When installing domestic smoke alarm circuit (eg mains interlinked alarms with battery back up), I always thought it was good practice to install it as part of a regularly used lighting circuit to ensure that the householder could easily be aware if the circuit breaker had tripped. I looked online and saw many recommendations to use a 15A breaker for interconnected smoke detectors (and nothing else on that circuit ). In the event of a fire, the last thing you want is the HVAC system to be pumping fresh air to the fire and circulating the smoke and poisonous fumes through-out the rest of the building.
