Emmarentia botanical gardens

The overlooking dam and home to many ducks, geese and other bird species, brings a sense of peace to all its visitors. I certainly was not aware of the behind the scenes operations of this green space – there are greenhouses , a herbarium, administration offices, and a compost site all hidden from view to the average user. These gardens offer beautiful walkways, arches and relaxing parkside benches, with sprawling lawns and even a waterfall to enjoy.

The Emmarentia Dam is situated immediately to the east of the garden and shares its extensive acreage. Set in the heartland of Joburg, Emmarentia Park has two major attractions for visitors. These gardens are beautifully manicured and well looked after which makes it great place to relax and enjoy the tranquillity of the natural beauty around you. Its one of the youngest gardens in the country, being only yrs old. The garden is situated about 6km of the City Centre.

Held on the last Sunday afternoon of the month starting at 13h0 with members meeting for tea and biscuits first and then the meeting proper at 14h00. Located close to Emmarentia Dam, the gardens pose great scenic potential.

Apart from that a great variety of indigenous flora is also displayed in a well-organized manner. We are conveniently situated close to several amenities and you are sure to find one just for you. The combined area of the dam and its gardens is over hectares, which is fortunate as this glorious emerald of a park, with its contrasting areas of activity and serenity, draws an inordinate amount of visitors on a daily basis. The park is only six kilometres from the city centre. Drivers can make use of the free onsite parking facilities.

The dam and botanical gardens are open daily, from sunrise to sunset and admission is free. Please join us at our usual venue, The Floreum, JHB Botanical Gardens , Olifants Road North parking, Emmarentia. With the central area built in the early 19th century, the botanical garden today covers an area of hectares (2acres) and shelters a variety of indigenous and imported trees, succulents, cacti, and flowers.

Besides exploring various themed gardens , you can also visit the recreational space to cycle or jog amid the evergreens and exotic plants. This picnic spot is also popular among the people as a weekend getaway, where you can spend whole day with the family and friends for unlimited fun. The botanical gardens have the potential to be stunning with proper care and attention but it currently feels neglected and unloved.

The signage for the plants is almost nonexistent. Here you’ll find a range of free-standing houses, flats and charming cluster homes surrounded by greenery. The flat is situated in walking distance to Roosevelt Park High School, Emmarentia Botanical Gardens and various bus routes.

Regret - not pet friendly. Visitors can enjoy the various special gardens and the main arboretum, which houses family groupings of plants and trees from South Africa and the rest of the world. Pick a spot on the tranquil lawn next to the dam and enjoy an escape from the city life with your family.

Significant transformation of the upper catchment, such as loss of vegetation, floodplain and wetland encroachment and increased hard surfacing have resulted in many of the impacts now affecting the two dams.
