The overlooking dam and home to many ducks, geese and other bird species, brings a sense of peace to all its visitors. I certainly was not aware of the behind the scenes operations of this green space – there are greenhouses , a herbarium, administration offices, and a compost site all hidden from view to the average user. These gardens offer beautiful walkways, arches and relaxing parkside benches, with sprawling lawns and even a waterfall to enjoy.
The Emmarentia Dam is situated immediately to the east of the garden and shares its extensive acreage. Set in the heartland of Joburg, Emmarentia Park has two major attractions for visitors. These gardens are beautifully manicured and well looked after which makes it great place to relax and enjoy the tranquillity of the natural beauty around you. Held on the last Sunday afternoon of the month starting at 13h0 with members meeting for tea and biscuits first and then the meeting proper at 14h00. The dam and botanical gardens are open daily, from sunrise to sunset and admission is free. With the central area built in the early 19th century, the botanical garden today covers an area of hectares (2acres) and shelters a variety of indigenous and imported trees, succulents, cacti, and flowers.

The signage for the plants is almost nonexistent. Here you’ll find a range of free-standing houses, flats and charming cluster homes surrounded by greenery. The flat is situated in walking distance to Roosevelt Park High School, Emmarentia Botanical Gardens and various bus routes.
Regret - not pet friendly. Visitors can enjoy the various special gardens and the main arboretum, which houses family groupings of plants and trees from South Africa and the rest of the world. Pick a spot on the tranquil lawn next to the dam and enjoy an escape from the city life with your family.
Significant transformation of the upper catchment, such as loss of vegetation, floodplain and wetland encroachment and increased hard surfacing have resulted in many of the impacts now affecting the two dams.
