I bike has been sitting for the last two years. I changed the oil and started it. I get normal exhaust from the rear cylinder but I get puffs of white smoke from the front cylinder. When I shut the bike off I get a trail of white smoke from that cylinder. The plugs are black and slighty.
The white smoke from the exhaust means that the engine oil is leaking into the combustion chamber where the petrol burns. Hence the engine is now burning engine oil along with petrol. The burning engine oil produces a white smoke. Now, white smoke usually indicates moisture. Next up that comes to mind is condensation.
Not uncommon on the Ironhead. Probably some oil ran down the valve stem. You can do a compression test or a leakdown test to check the rings.
If it is below degrees Fahrenheit , then white smoke is perfectly normal until the engine warms up. If it continues after the engine is warm, then there is a source of excess water somewhere in the engine. Not likely if you have an air-cooled bike. It could also mean that you are running in a cold climate, if the temp is around or less I would call this normal.
If your bike is water cooled I would keep a close eye on your coolant level and oil level. Skip navigation Sign in. How to do routine maintenance oil change Harley Davidson Motorcycle. Harley , How to stop Blow -by - Duration: 11:48.
Two weeks ago I had the oil change brakes done and the rocker box gaskets replaced. I took it out for the first ride, five miles into the ride loss of power and white smoke billowing rom the right side exhaust. Oil pump malfunction or blown head gasket?
White smoke is usually caused by water in the combustion chamber, so if there is water in your gas then you could see white smoke. Alternatively, if your bike is water cooled you could have a head gasket leak, allowing coolant into the combustion chamber and producing the smoke. Although this morning it started bellowing white smoke. It usually does a little bit if its cool out but not like this.
It smelled like normal rich exhaust but the smoke lingered for a bit then disappeared. As the bike got warmer it stopped smoking and the exhaust went to clear. I shut it down and waited for about seconds before I started it up again.
Harley is coming to pick up tomorrow, they did not want me to drive it up there. A bad head gasket is probably the culprit. To narrow down the problem do a leakdown test;. White smoke from my intake and engine area only when the Harley fat boy gets about 300° is that normal? The smoke has a distinct burned oil smell.
Took the bike to the shop. My FXR (Evo, no cam, Crankcase breather with external filter, not plumbed into airbox) blows a little smoke at traffic lights, not much, but enough that you can see it in the headlight at night. Next morning I noticed smoke and dark water coming out of the exhaust.
