Diesel engine knocking and white smoke

Diesel engine knocking and white smoke

Usually, white smoke indicates that the diesel fuel is not burning correctly. Unburned diesel fuel will make its way through the exhaust completely unused. Be careful of white smoke as it will irritate your eyes and skin. Let’s check out these probable reasons that cause white smoke from exhaust issue. This typically occurs due to the engine being too cool to burn the fuel , often resulting from low compression in one cylinder, problems with the fuel injection timing or a defective fuel injector.

I was having a hard time starting the truck for some time and when it would finally start it would blow a cloud of white smoke and then be fine. Diesel Smoke tells YOU a Story. Basically, smoke from a diesel engine indicates that something is not right. Problems in this area will cause diesel engine starting problems, uneven running and white smoke when the engine is cold. It should be taken as an indication that there is a problem existing (or developing), that will potentially shorten the engine life, or result in unnecessary costs.

Project Farm 440views. Knocking in a diesel engine is different then knocking in a gas engine. In a diesel engine timing plays a big role. What could make a diesel engine produce white smoke?

What causes excessive white smoke from a diesel engine? Why does my diesel engine have white smoke? Can bad diesel cause white smoke? Identifying the smoky colours, often black or white smoke , can help you diagnose the cause of the problem.

That in turn can help you cure and stop a smoking diesel engine. Do you see white smoke from a diesel engine when accelerating or startup? The knock and bucking are also indicative of injection problems.

Could be one or more injectors hanging open under a loa or, even the FASS failing at high load. The other day, it acted like an injector stuck, lots of white smoke out of the tail pipe and a bad engine knocking. There are normally signs of this happening, white exhaust that is hot and high in moisture, fluctuating. This is much the same as a gasoline engine suffering from pre-ignition or spark knocking.

Are you saying you see shavings on the oil on the dipstick? When combustion is incomplete, a diesel mist comes from the exhaust. It is very common when starting a diesel in very cold weather. White smoke usually is an indication of vaproized fuel. A diesel engine can ping, cling, clang and bang, and all the time you are wondering just what is acceptable and what is not.

The black smoke is inefficent burnt fuel (partial burn) loaded up. Your balance rates are far from any concern. Sounds like something minor since they were in there recently. This topic has replies, voices, and was last updated weeks ago by chuck young. Last evening I saw white smoke coming out from the engine and heard a strange sound coming from it.

If water is getting into the engine it could cause that knocking noise. The other issue with the knocking could be as serious as a rod through the engine block. How many miles are on this engine ? It is possible that a small amount of coolant can seep into the combustion chamber through a leaky head gasket, and as the engine warms up, the small gap can close completely.

Have them do a pressure test on the cooling system when the engine is cold.
