This lovely garden is situated in the centre of the coastal fynbos where the flora is at its richest. It encompasses mountain slopes with wind-clipped heathlands, deep gorges with relict forests, flats and marshes with restios, sedges and bulbs, as well as dunes adjacent to the beach with specialised salt-adapted plants. This botanical garden offers lovely, scenic views of the mountains and a wide variety of indigenous plants. With about 6plant species, the area contains a floral diversity per unit area that is greater than anywhere else in the world.

Deep in the heart of the fynbos region, it is one of the best places to explore coastal fynbos. The garden is renowned for its waterfalls, amber pools, deep gorges and abundant birdlife. It consists of hectares of cultivated fynbos garden and 190. The Saturday ParkRuns continue and offer participants free entry to the Garden. Also free is admission to pensioners on the first Tuesday of every month. Encompassing thick forest, marshlands, and undulating beaches, the verdant landscape is considered one of the most biologically diverse on the continent. It’s only about an hour’s drive from Cape Town, just off Clarence Drive at Betty’s Bay, and well worth the drive.


It’s also where sea, mountains and fynbos meet. We’ve seen a lot of beautiful private gardens in our first days, but the botanical enthusiasts are itching to see the unique fynbos flora! Harold Porter Garden is one of the country’s national botanical gardens. The Institute, with its Head Office at Pretoria, also maintains plant reference collections at three national herbaria, and is actively involved in biodiversity research and. Marius mentioned that it would make a beautiful wedding venue.

An entrance fee is payable. We ate at the Red Disa Restaurant and that was wonderful too! With hectares of cultivated garden and 1hectares of natural fynbos, it’s well worth a visit. Located less than hours from Cape Town, this place will carry you away between tranquility and peacefulness. At the foot of three majestic mountains, the stunning scenery seems unreal.


I’ve already given you so many, so if you only have three days for this road like I did you really have to make choices.
