Motorway signs

Motorway road signs are always blue in colour and are used to inform motorists of directions or general information. Motorway signs are often in place from as much as one mile to provide traffic with sufficient warning to change to an appropriate lane if necessary. On approach, the motorway signs are coloured blue and white to help distinguish them from other routes.

The motorway signs may also stand alone and are bordered in white. Regulatory signs give instructions to motorists , pedestrians, and cyclists. Signs such as stop, no parking, no turns, and yield are considered regulatory signs. Some have special shapes, such as the octagon for the stop sign and the X shape for railroad crossings.

Roadway signs in the United States increasingly use symbols rather than words to convey their message. Symbols provide instant communication with roadway users, overcome language barriers, and are becoming standard for traffic control devices throughout the world. On motorways kilometre signs are visible at intervals of 5metres (6ft) indicating the distance from the start of the motorway. Signs on primary routes - green backgrounds​ Blue panels indicate that the motorway starts at the junction ahead.

Motorways shown in brackets can also be reached along the route indicated. White panels indicate local or non-primary routes leading from the junction ahead. For use on busy motorways and other wide roads where verge mounted signs would be frequently obstructed by other traffic. An advance direction sign (ADS) generally has blue, green or white as its background colour to indicate the status of a road ( motorway , primary or non-primary) on which it is placed. Except on the main carriageway of a motorway , coloured panels are used to indicate routes from the junction being signed that have a different status.
