On the common rail Cummins , white smoke is more characteristic of an injector problem. Blowing white smoke is a red flag for your diesel engine, yet we see this happen all the time to our customers. In many cases, white smoke emanating from the tailpipe (often at idle once the engine reached operating temperature) typically means a worn out injector.
On the new Cummins engines that I install, like the 3C , white smoke at start-up can be of concern in many circumstance. These engines have ” state of the art” seawater after-cooling, piston cooling nozzles, and are optimized for full power output. Usually, white smoke indicates that the diesel fuel is not burning correctly. Unburned diesel fuel will make its way through the exhaust completely unused. Be careful of white smoke as it will irritate your eyes and skin.
L Cummins engine, and I am having some problems. Sometimes when it is col the truck sputters and blows white smoke , and it takes a few minutes to clear out. I do not believe your white smoke is oil but fuel from your VP4 I heard this same story (and had it happen to me) too many times.
You may be loosing oil in the form of a leak but the white smoke your talking about sounds more like fuel which leads me to believe your VPis saying bye bye. This is somewhat normal. Same goes for when asking for much power when the engine is cold.
Faulty fuel injectors are also known to cause white smoke. Blows white (steam) smoke only every once. So if it should happen that once I do the injector leak test and find nothing blowing bubbles, what would be the most likely cause? TDC and plunger lift to determine timing.
A cracked engine block or cylinder head will produce the same effect. Both fuel and coolant have a distinctive smell. On a cold engine it is very common to produce that from the exhaust during a cold startup. The big Cummins and Cats will lay down a smoke screen for several minutes at cold startup.
So if it would idle for 10min the smoke would disappear because the high temp would compensate for the lower compression. White smoke is caused by either unburned fuel or coolant. If the exhaust smells almost like bug spray, it is unburned fuel. Injector and poor fuel problems can typically be cleared up by treating the truck with Diesel Extreme. Toyota lumps are very reliable so get some help, a good diesel mechanic would have a clip on tester that would check each cylinder.
They do not completely stop spraying fuel when they are OFF. Has anyone had a cummins isx smoke , its not white smoke either. Unfortuneatly, it seems like the 04. Normally, it would happen at startup in cold weather with lower compression engines and retarded timing.
Water entering combustion spaces will also create white smoke. Faulty head gaskets and cracked cylinder heads or blocks are a common cause of water entry, and are often to blame. IF you have a Cummins engine and your truck is blowing smoke when pulling a hill during a regen it is probably the doc filter.
My truck blew smoke for about months without throwing a code.
