White smoke from new alternator

It sounds like the alternator circuitry went bad so that when you connected the fully charged battery, it back fed through the alternator and burned out the wiring and circuitry inside. So I threw in a new alternator and jumped the battery, but it just cranks without firing up, and all the warning lights are lit up on the dash.
