It sounds like the alternator circuitry went bad so that when you connected the fully charged battery, it back fed through the alternator and burned out the wiring and circuitry inside. I recharge the battery over night on a portable charger. Next day I hook the battery back up and instantly white smoke is coming out of the alternator.

New alternator is not charging battery. I purchased a new alternator and installed it (correctly) and when I started the car it began to smoke after seconds and was making an audible whining noise. The smoke was obviously visible.


I jumped out and thought I saw a little smoke or steam come from the driver side headlight area. Today i connected the battery up and was gonna start it. THEN i saw smoke billowing out of the alternator ? The alternator was smoking before I even started the car and got super hot to the touch. The oil filler cap in almost all the engines releases a faint whiff of smoke , which is a residue of the burnt fuel inside the engine.

Older engines produce more hot spots, which make the car smoking under hood but not overheating. Did you check the impeller in the raw water pump ? White smoke is usually insufficent cooling water. Alternator : has the cable going from the alternator to the lamp in the dashboard fallen off somewhere?


That cable starts the alternator. When an alternator fails, the bearings inside usually have failed to a point that causes them to whine severely an depending on how badly they have faile they may also smoke due to the excessive friction they create. When the hood is open one can view a tad bit of white smoke coming from where the belts are housed. That’s what I think the problem may be but I would appreciate any feedback or suggestions from you. Shut the truck off and continue to see smoke billowing out from alternator area.


So I threw in a new alternator and jumped the battery, but it just cranks without firing up, and all the warning lights are lit up on the dash. So I continue driving my car on that initial charge, and it's working fine. I go back to get my alternator teste bad alternator. The next day I drive about miles to a mechanic I know. He switches out the alternator , and when I leave it sputters really bad and dies.
