E46 white smoke

White smoke can be a big problem or not, depending on the thickness. The white smoke is the result of normal condensation which builds up inside the exhaust system. If I continue to drive the car the smoke continue to come out. This morning, I noticed a lot of whitish smoke coming from the exhaust when I started up. I LIVE in CAli and i had a CCV go out and was blowing white smoke.

My step daughter had a problem a few months back in her Eafter she got gas at a strange (i.e. not the local, usual) gas station. Blew lots of white smoke for a while until it burned off eventually.

This is my first post on E46Fanatics so please excuse any lack of information. My theory and that of diesel mechanic that stopped to assist on the motorway is that the turbo seals have failed meaning that turbo suffered moderate failure. No smoke on hard acceleration or at anytime after that, until the next startup if it sits for a while. Do you get the smoke when moving also, or just at startups?


If there is smoke consistently, one possible cause could be a bad oil separator. And well now its starting to missfire. So i checked it and it said cylinder number missfire, So i changed all the spark plugs and still it didnt do any better and now white smoke is coming out of the exhuast, only at cold starts cause when it warms up the smoke goes away so i think my cat is getting hot enought to do its job. It had a new Turbo at 48K and last year I had the EGR replaced which transformed the performance. If the head gasket is blown, the oil will mix with the coolant and the oil will have a brown, milky appearance. If white smoke comes out of the tailpipe even after the car is warme there is a good chance there is a problem.

Appears to be darker smoke not oil like blue smoke. Only other issue I have with the truck is an occasional cloud of blue smoke when I start it which I believe is just aging valve seals. What is causing the cloud of smoke after a downhill?


Did some research and decided to monitor it the next time I started it up.
