If the belt is actually smoking then something is causing it to slip or rubbing on it. Since you did not note any loss of drive or performance the overall tension should be okay, meaning any slipping or rubbing is most likely in one particular area. I see and smell smoke coming from top of deck when I engage the blades. I believe it is the belt because I smell burning rubber.

It does not look like anything is stuck and the blades turn. Is it time for a new belt? Does this happen when the belt gets stretched?
