A difficult choice, considering the design and incredibly useful Pathlight really still make the Protect stand out to HomeKit-compatible alternatives. The Protect is packed with useful sensors, which makes it incredibly interesting for HomeKit. With HomeKit support, it could at once add sensors to the Home app for: smoke and CO, obviously. I was very impressed with everything until day 2. So it is possible things outside of ST are making changes… Also note nest presence is not a motion detector.

The innovative smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector will still keep you safe without driving you crazy. But more work is still need to make the smart home truly brilliant. It includes a photoelectric sensor for smoke detection, a carbon monoxide detector and speaker.

It lacks the natural gas detection of the Roost, but calling an electrician and wiring a couple of alarms isn’t in the cards. I’m wary of entrusting something as important as a smoke alarm to a smart device. With Nest, there are many places “automations can be inserted” into the world.
