The small group of Friends was encouraged by the GBG Director, Ian Rogers, to work towards the establishment of a kiosk to encourage visitors to come to the Botanic Gardens. Beautifully created sandwiches with mouth-watering fillings, freshly baked scones with cream and jam, little sweet desserts accompanied with lashings of tea and coffee all presented on fine china and enjoyed in Darwin’s gardens. Some are reminiscent of old fairy tales with huge climbing branches and have cute little flowers in the undergrowth, perfect for fairies to hide amongst. The first curator of the gardens was the English born botanist and gardener Daniel Bunce who developed and expanded the gardens in terms of both its physical size and in the amount of established plants which it contained. Paul Fiel who revitalised the institution, said it was a chance to give something back to the people of Geelong.
