The black smoke that you see is mostly associated with this kind of flame. Coming to smoke , a hotter fire will convert more of the fuel into elemental carbon which, because of being hot, rises up in the atmosphere and appears as a black cloud. However, where the fire is not hot enough, like in the initial stage of jungle fire , the trees that are burning release more of water vapor from their trunks getting heated and hence release white smoke. There is no absolute rule of “black smoke = an oxygen-starved fire”. It’s not as simple as that.

You need to consider the materials that are burning, for instance. Large fires involving plastics produce copious quantities of black smoke. Fuel needs to be burnt fully as it will only emit COand water, which do not cause black smoke. Thin, black , fast smoke indicates a well-ventilated fire is nearby. Slow, white, dissipating smoke (first thick but thinning quickly) is a sign of steam, and indicates early stage heating.

All smoke contains carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and particulate matter (PM or soot). In the case of coal burning steam engines the difference in color is associated with the air temperature. On cold days the smoke is white due to the moisture content and therefore it looks white like steam, whereas in hotter climates the smoke is black showing the carbon and ash clearly. Even after the burner cycles off, accumulated oil in the firebox burns and causes an after fire. Once the burner is off, the fan also stops running and oxygen is no longer delivered to the flame.

An oxygen-deprived flame generates thick, black smoke that exits the chimney. Did you notice how black the smoke was? Ever seen a house fire ?
