Overfilling the engine will cause white smoke. If you are using anything other than weight oil , drain the oil and refill with weight oil. It can also be caused by a broken ring or a worn cylinder wall.
Briggs and Stratton engine that blows white smoke when the blades are engaged and the smoke gets worse as the loading increases. I also found the breather tube diconnected and leaking oil. Move the mower to level and runs well. I replaced the gasoline just to be safe as the owner had not run the generator for several years.
The generator ran great after changing the gasoline. Odd that, as it was okay in the summer. While it may look ba an engine blowing smoke is often not a serious malfunction, but it can turn into something worse if left to its own.
Different colors of smoke can indicate different problems with your engine. I changed the oil and the problem persists. The choke cam seems to be operating ok, however I did not check to see if the cam had come loose from the choke shaft.
Then it started leaking oil out of the muffler. I took the muffler off, and the combustion chamber is very black with oil. It also seems to lose some power to cut and has plenty of oil.

Fortunately, a smoke - blowing engine may not be a serious issue unless you don’t pay attention to the smoke. White smoke is usually caused by excess fuel burning – Many times this is a very simple issue to resolve. The white smoke is the engine burning off all the excess oil. The fix - drain the excessive oil, and idle the engine until the smoke clears. This may take minutes or so.
Depending on your mower type, draining the oil can be a pain in the ass. It mowed more yards after that. The smoke got me worried that the motor was going to blow. The oil level was full, I check it every morning that I mow. HP engine began blowing a huge amount of white smoke out of the muffler today.
The motor is just shy of 4hrs. I immediately shut it down and let the mower cool down. I looked at the air filter an hour or so later, and there appeared to be oil all over the back of the filter. Am I overfilling the oil? You can usually correct this problem by cleaning the air filter.
Blue or white smoke means the engine is burning oil. Most of the time, the lawn mower smoke will stop on its own. The system is a great idea no doubt, no more fiddling around with choke levers or priming bulbs. The result is no smoke on startup or while running.
The label on the deck clearly says oz oil SAE for the engine.
