White smoke from exhaust diesel

What does it mean when a diesel engine is blowing white smoke? What causes white smoke from tailpipe? Why is white smoke coming from tailpipe? This typically occurs due to the engine being too cool to burn the fuel , often resulting from low compression in one cylinder, problems with the fuel injection timing or a defective fuel injector. Diesel engines can emit blue , black or white smoke from their exhaust while running, and each color can indicate a fault with a part or system.


The good news is, not all white smoke signals problems in your car, as some can be due to normal condensation too. A rule of thumb though is the thicker the white smoke , the greater is your problem. The white smoke is the result of normal condensation which builds up inside the exhaust system.


Usually with white smoke you’re either spitting out vaporous un-burned diesel or steam. White smoke can be a big problem or not, depending on the thickness. To tell the difference between the two is fairly easy, if your engine is making white smoke right from start up and the smoke sits on the water without disappearing you’re most likely looking at un-burned diesel. The commonest cause of white smoke is likely injector pump timing. In order to function properly, a diesel engine needs precise timing of the injector pump and high pressure.

So, any decrease in the pressure or delay in the fuel delivery to the combustion chamber will result in incomplete combustion, leading to white smoke. If white smoke continues to come out of your exhaust while the car is running, there are other issues at fault. One cause of white smoke from the exhaust might be the engine leaking coolant.


If the engine leaks coolant , it will be burned by the heat of the engine and then come out as smoke from the exhaust. Usually, white smoke indicates that the diesel fuel is not burning correctly.


Unburned diesel fuel will make its way through the exhaust completely unused. Be careful of white smoke as it will irritate your eyes and skin. In this case, bad seals or piston rings cause oil to leak into combustion chamber which then mixes with fuel and burns.


The result is a white or light bluish smoke that comes out from exhaust manifold. This is usually the last color of smoke you want to see, particularly on gas cars. If the smoke is thin, and goes away relatively quickly, than it is merely condensation. However, thicker, longer lasting smoke is a much larger headache. Your engine is more than likely burning coolant.

So, when you switch on the ignition after a few hours, such as in the morning after a cold night, this moisture comes out of the exhaust as white smoke. It usually comes out as a white fog and stops on its own after a couple of minutes. Technically, the white color is caused by the light-scattering characteristics of the re-condensed droplets of fuel (un-burned or partially burned) larger than one micron.
