The Calyx is occasionally closed for private access. The garden party features entertainment through the night, free-flowing drinks and food. Boasting stunning architecture, the Southern Hemisphere’s largest green wall, a light Asian fusion menu by day and a stunning event space by night.
It features an exhibition room and learnign centre, a display courtyard and a tiny island surrounded by a circular walkway with pergola. The unmissable pollination exhibition with its vibrant floral displays is open to the public at the Calyx till the 15th of August. When I went they had an incredible exhibit of carnivorous plants. The exhibit was really well put together and was free to visit. The work involved construction of a new entertainment and display facility and integration to an existing ARC glasshouse which was also totally refurbished as part of the program. It lives in the Royal Botanic Garden and is well cared for by its staff.
There are educational signs on the flora that lies within it. An integrated mix of indoor and outdoor areas, the Calyx plays host to different exhibitions throughout the year. My Mum, also my best frien kicked off the year with a special birthday ending in a zero back in January.
With more than 10plants growing along it, maintaining the. Aussie native plants, a Kunzea Ambigua, showing off. The Heritage Dictionary of the English Language defines a calyx as “the outermost part of a flower”. On the outside it’s an architectural and very beautiful structure occupying the site of the old glass square pyramid Tropical Centre and built on to the Ken Woolley-designed quarter-circle ‘Arc’ glasshouse which survived demolition.
Pollination is a FREE display, curated by The Gardens horticultural team, featuring a large collection of plants and flowers showcasing the role colour plays during pollination. Budding horticulturalists who like plants with attitude should head to the Royal Botanical Gardens for a free exhibition of carnivorous greenery. Savour modern Asian cuisine designed by Ambassador Chef Luke Nguyen upstairs at Botanic House restaurant or enjoy casual dining downstairs at Farm Cove Eatery.
Register your interest to be among the first to get. But you might not know that they also have a restaurant that is disguised as a cafeteria counter. Furthermore it has added a exhibition space and a ‘moat’ containing an island of topiary monkeys.

This landmark project, designed by PTW Architects in celebration of the Royal Botanic Garden’s 200th Birthday, was conceived as a ‘jewel in the Garden’: a serene and peaceful arbour pavilion with the capacity for ever changing requirements when displaying plants.
