If you see a thick white smoke at the beginning of combustion cycle of Espar , Webasto, Belief, Tuite or similar heaters – it’s time for maintenance. If you don’t do this – your heater will become less efficient, will smoke more and more, start having flameouts and ignition faults an eventually, will. The thick white smoke is the universal symptom of Espar problems.


It is actually unburnt fuel being vaporized by the glow plug. Just about anything wrong with the unit will cause it. The atomizer screen is probably the most common problem with a previously-well-behaved heater. Clouds of White Smoke when starting the Espar D2.


After about 8hours of usage, the Espar Dshowed signs of thick white smoke coming out the exhaust pipe upon startup. Once the fuel ignite and the heater began to work, the white smoke would disappear. The onboard computer senses too much fuel, too much air, not enough air and tries to compensate for it and hence the white smoke and shutdown. These hoses and pipes should be replaced on a regular basis. The Espar will not run for long at altitudes greater than 0feet.


It means there is carbon accumulation inside the heater. Sometimes it does on the secong or third attempt - tries times before shutting down automatically if no success. During this time a lot of white smoke comes from the exhaust - and I mean a lot!


If it does fire up then the smoke disappears as it warms up and it works OK. In fact if its bad , the flame failure device typically trips of the fuel supply and the heater will not complete the start cycle. Made for a cold morning. On Saturday the Espar was still running like a champ… Symptoms: the D4s goes through the starting routine (blower starts, a short while later the Diesel pump starts to click) but only produces white smoke coming out of the (exterior) exhaust pipe.


Heater appears to operate normally, except a fuse or breaker blows or trips for no apparent reason. Then the heater shuts itself off. Most heater issues are due to lack of some very simple preventative maintenance procedures. You have probably seen it before: You turn on your Espar , you hear the fan, then the fuel metering pump.


So far, so goo right? During the initial startup, I had a bit of smoke and burning smell coming out of the heater and exhaust as the heater burned off manufacturing oils. Within minutes the wispy smoke was gone. The heater has been in for a few weeks now, and I still smile every time I turn it on.


In some cases, it is possible to clean the heater without disassembly, by running the heater on high using Kerosene instead of Diesel fuel. Since I have a gasser it kind of limits me to the gas fired heater or propane.
