According to RBG, French hybrids form the basis of the collection, but also displayed are Preston hybrids (originated in Canada by Isabella Preston), early-bloomers, such as hyacinth lilacs, and a selection of species found in the wild. Always something happening, something to see. Plan to spend a couple hours wandering around.
Its double florets were the result of a spontaneous mutation and were then used in the pioneering hybridization work of French nurseryman, Victor Lemoine who created the fragrant double lilacs known as French hybrid lilacs. RBG is amazing to visit any time of the year. Be sure to take the time to sit and just relax smell the roses. Guests will enjoy eclectic music performances situated under the Rose Garden Tent that accommodates up to 6people.
RBG offers a diverse festival and event calendar for all interests. The RBG has their own calendar of annual events, including floral society shows, bloom festivals coinciding with bloom dates (see what’s in bloom at different times of year), and seasonal brunches (Valentine’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day, Santa Brunch). Lilacs are a huge thing in my life. I grew up in the small city of Belleville, ON, that town that you drive through now to get to Prince Edward County when you’re going Wine Touring. Coming there just before the festival has allowed us to explore the place by ourselves, without large crowds.
