Engine blowing white smoke

What causes white smoke from engine? What does it mean when a diesel engine is blowing white smoke? Why does engine give white smoke?

Engine blowing white smoke

One reason for white smoke is very common and completely harmless. One of two conditions is responsible for white smoke blowing out of your exhaust. First is normal condition (so you don’t have to panic) and the second is a not so normal condition which should be fixed as soon as possible.

As the engine warms up and the condensation dissipates the white exhaust smoke (steam) is no longer seen. White smoke can be a big problem or not, depending on the thickness. The white smoke is the result of normal condensation which builds up inside the exhaust system. Blowing white smoke is a red flag for your diesel engine , yet we see this happen all the time to our customers. In many cases, white smoke emanating from the tailpipe (often at idle once the engine reached operating temperature) typically means a worn out injector.

Condensation that accumulates inside the exhaust pipes, converter and mufflers can produce a puff of white smoke upon diesel engine start-up. In very cold temperatures, the heated exhaust can freeze into minute fuel droplets when exiting the exhaust and produce a more prolonged emission of white smoke for a very short period of driving time. The fix - drain the excessive oil, and idle the engine until the smoke clears. Depending on your mower type, draining the oil can be a pain in the ass.

This may take minutes or so. I got this Briggs and Stratton oil extractor, on Amazon, makes life soooo easy. A brand new diesel engine running at full load will experience a little bit of blow -by upon startup. Blow -by is a condition where diesel fuel, air and vapor are pushed past the rings into the crankcase of the engine. Note: If the engine has to be tilte ensure the spark plug is facing upwards to help prevent oil from escaping the crankcase.

If you have this problem along with white smoke coming out of your tailpipe, there are several reasons as to why the white smoke is being produced. A cracked engine block can allow coolant from these passages to enter the combustion chamber, resulting in white smoke. Solution: Usually, the entire engine will need to be replaced. Again, this may not be worth it, depending on the value of your car.

Blue-gray or gray- white smoke. The mainreason for the appearanceof blue smoke - oil gets into the engine cylinders. Oily smoke may have blue color with various hues - from transparent blue to blue- white , depending on the engine operating condition, and the degree of the oil heating that got into the cylinders. Patrick, the heavy white smoke is created when the engine is burning oil. Overfilling the engine will cause white smoke.

Check the oil level to be sure the crankcase is not overfilled. If you are using anything other than weight oil, drain the oil and refill with weight oil. It can also be caused by a broken ring or a worn cylinder wall. If it has trouble starting in the morning and it is coming out when you are trying to start it then it is most likely vaporised diesel.
