Excessive white smoke from diesel engine

Why does my diesel engine have white smoke? Why is my engine plowing white smoke? Can bad diesel cause white smoke? White smoke often occurs when there is either too much fuel being injected into the combustion chamber, or not enough heat to burn the fuel. To be more specific, the white smoke you see is your diesel fuel , unburne or only partially burned.

The commonest reasons for this lie in the fuel system. They range from faulty fuel injectors to retarded fuel injectio n timing, or even low compression. The most noticeable symptom of internal coolant leakage is when the white smoke is billowing out of the exhaust pipe and leaves a sweet odor in the air. White smoke occurs in a diesel engine when the diesel fuel goes through the engine and reaches the exhaust without having been burned.

This typically occurs due to the engine being too cool to burn the fuel , often resulting from low compression in one cylinder, problems with the fuel injection timing or a defective fuel injector. Continuous white smoke while driving is one of them. If you are having a diesel , white smoke may be unburned fuel or coolant going through the engine. But mostly, it is the incorrect injector timing in the cylinders.

White Smoke White smoke can be caused by either excess fuel or an internal coolant leak in your engine. This is a case where you’ll probably want to call in the diesel pros, but here’s a diagnostic tip: While the engine is smoking , hold your hand over the exhaust outlet for seconds or so. Consistent smoke coming from the exhaust most likely indicates a deeper internal problem with the engine. Excessive Exhaust Smoke Because, excessive exhaust smoke means you have an engine issue on your hands. Take note of when the smoke appears and what color it is.

Avoiding the problem will only shorten the life of the engine and result in unnecessary repair bills. Diesel Smoke tells YOU a Story. Identifying the smoky colours, often black or white smoke , can help you diagnose the cause of the problem. That in turn can help you cure and stop a smoking diesel engine. Do you see white smoke from a diesel engine when accelerating or startup?

Excessive white smoke from diesel engine

Since this is a boat and marine diesel forum, an white smoke seems to come with the territory, I’ll first start by giving you about twenty years of personal experience with white smoke. If there is only smoke on start up, which goes away when the truck gets warmed up, it is likely unburned fuel. An injector with stiction.

A small amount of smoke or steam from the exhaust pipe of the car is normal at start up or under power. Typically, once a vehicle starts producing smoke the pattern will continue until the engine is repaired. The color of the smoke will help determine what to look for when troubleshooting the problem.

What color is the smoke ? Black smoke from a diesel engine is caused by an unbalanced air-to-fuel ratio. Either not enough oxygen is being added to burn the fuel, or too much fuel is in the mix. It should be taken as an indication that there is a problem existing (or developing), that will potentially shorten the engine life, or result in unnecessary costs.

Basically, smoke from a diesel engine indicates that something is not right.
