Ozone index

Ozone forms in the sun, usually on hot summer days. You can reduce your exposure to ozone and still get exercise! Ozone can be good or ba depending on where it is found: Good Ozone. The good news is there’s a lot you can do to protect yourself and your family from the health effects caused by ground-level ozone.

Start by learning about the Air Quality Index from the U. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It is a pale blue gas with a distinctively pungent smell. It is an allotrope of oxygen that is much less stable than the diatomic allotrope O breaking down in the lower atmosphere to O 2. How Can Ozone Be Both Good and Bad?

The layer closest to the Earth's surface is the troposphere. Ozone occurs in two layers of the atmosphere. In the upper atmosphere, ozone forms a protective layer that shields us from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. At ground level, ozone is a harmful air pollutant and a primary constituent of urban smog.

Ozone is a highly reactive form of oxygen. Known as tropospheric or ground-level ozone , this gas is harmful to human heath and the environment. Since it forms from emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), these pollutants are regulated under air quality standards.

OZONE AND PARTICLE POLLUTION. The maps show the higher of the estimated ozone AQI and PM2. The Forecasted AQI maps are created from data submitted the State Air Quality Forecasters. Why is air quality important?

What is the EPA ozone standard? The stratospheric ozone layer is Earth’s “sunscreen” – protecting living things from too much ultraviolet radiation from the sun. The emission of ozone depleting substances has been damaging the ozone layer.

Moderate conditions are most likely within the Denver Metro Area and extending northward in to southern and western Weld County, including Greeley. The Germans have a long history of applying ozone in a therapy known as Autohematherapy. This therapy requires the removal of a pint of blood from the body, ozonating it, and reintroducing the blood into the bloodstream. All data are reported in Mountain Standard Time (MST).

During daylight savings time add one hour to the reported hour. As you can see, each color also corresponds to a range of Air Quality Index Values. You can think of the AQI as a yardstick that runs from to 500.

The higher the AQI value, the greater the level of air pollution and the greater the health danger. Ozone exposures are higher in these major cities because there are more cars, industry and other nitrogen oxide emissions sources then rural areas. Ozone concentrations can increase considerably on hot-sunny days when there is a stagnant air mass (i.e. little to no winds) present.
