The second car in front of me, a greenish silver BMW Ewith SGJ plate suddenly emitted a lot of white smoke from his exhaust and the effect was almost like a smoke bomb , enough to decrease visibility to almost zero across lanes. If I continue to drive the car the smoke continue to come out. White smoke - coolant, black smoke - fuel , grey - engine oil. When the engine is running the smoke appears, then fades, then shortly comes back. I also noticed today theres drops of oil from the exhaust.
The white smoke is the result of normal condensation which builds up inside the exhaust system. It blows whitish (maybe with a blue tint) smoke if the engine is warm and idling and then i give it a blip. Oil indicator still shows full after about 2k of driving.
Is the coolant level changing at all, and is the coolant still clean looking or does it have any traces of oil mixing in? Was the thermostat also changed? BMW 320D - White Smoke Mystery.
I have had a 320D Auto from new, now done 65K miles. It had a new Turbo at 48K and last year I had the EGR replaced which transformed the performance. Whitish-bluish smoke is oil burning. I doubt your head gasket needs replacement. A big 10-on that an OP, sorry for this.
However, if it was coming form the exhaust, and it was a result of burning oil, the smoke would be very black. I have never had any trouble with the car until this incident. What could have caused that? Help me understand what the problem is? Its only when I push on.
If the head gasket is blown, the oil will mix with the coolant and the oil will have a brown, milky appearance. If white smoke comes out of the tailpipe even after the car is warme there is a good chance there is a problem. I was recently struggling with cold starts, rough idle and puff off white smoke on cold starts.
Had it plugged in and had glow plug faults. Changed all plugs and relay. Starts better and no rough idle. Yet now and then I still get a puff of white smoke on start up. You notice white smoke coming from the exhaust when you start your car.
If it is cold out, this may be normal. If the smoke does not disappear after the car is warme you have a problem. Possible causes: Transmission fluid may be entering the intake manifold through vacuum modulator. I recently purchased your pcv kit.
I just checked the anti freeze and oil level. The anti freeze level was fine. Did you noticed that after your bmw engine idling for a short period of time at first few revs a cloud of blue grey smoke is coming out of exhaust tailpipe?
Is your engine using oil? I am wondering if anyone has suggestions for me. After that you get the smell on some low level all the time, but it seems to be briefly exacerbated by making a hard turn (i.e. a U-turn). You get a stronger whiff coming out.
A colleague bought a BMW about a month ago and has arrived at work this morning with some problems. The car is a 330i SE reg.
