Lowveld botanical gardens

Lowveld botanical gardens

The character of the Garden is shaped by the two main rivers that cut across it, namely the Crocodile and Nels Rivers. It began with simple clearing of bush so that pathways were created. Since then it has developed into a wonderful natural treasure enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. The Lowveld Botanical Gardens are one of botanical gardens in South Africa managed by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI). The natural part of the Garden is a mix between Lowveld Bushvel Savanna and Sour Lowveld Bushveld.

One of Botanical Gardens in South Africa, it is the Lowveld Botanical Garden that possess one of the largest South African fig tree collections. Home to the largest man-made African Rain Forest it lies in an area of approximately 160ha on both sides of the Crocodile River and the two sides are joined by two bridges. Boasting over 0plant species and one of the largest collections of cycads in Africa, the gardens play an important role in preserving the variety of wildlife in the region. The Garden plays a critical role in conservation of rare and endangered species and played a pivotal role in establishing the cycad gene bank. The Garden also boasts one of the largest collections of South African fig trees.

The mystical baobab tree is famous for its unique shape and medicinal properties. The two rivers create spectacular waterfalls which give this Garden. Kirstenbosch is the name of a famous botanical garden nestled at the foot of Table Mountain in Cape Town. It is on the eastern slopes of the mountain, not on the northern side. Cutting right through the centre of the city is the Lowveld Botanical Garden. Popular among residents and tourists, the garden is set on the banks of the Nels River and is a delight of indigenous greenery.
